How to Measure Your Windows for Blinds: A Step-by-Step Guide

Accurate measurements are crucial for made-to-measure blinds. While we always recommend our free home measuring service, this guide will help you understand the process and take initial measurements for quotes.

Tools You'll Need - Metal tape measure (not fabric) - Pencil and paper - Step ladder for high windows - Someone to help hold the tape

Recess vs Outside Fit First, decide whether your blinds will fit inside the window recess or outside covering the frame. Recess fit gives a clean, built-in look. Outside fit can make windows appear larger and ensures maximum light block.

Measuring for Recess Fit 1. Measure the width at three points: top, middle, and bottom 2. Use the SMALLEST measurement 3. Measure the drop at three points: left, centre, right 4. Use the SMALLEST measurement 5. Measure the recess depth to ensure your blind will fit

Measuring for Outside Fit 1. Measure the total width you want to cover 2. Add 5-10cm each side for optimal light blocking 3. Measure from where you want the blind to hang to where you want it to finish 4. Add 10-15cm above and below the window for best results

Special Considerations Check for obstructions like handles, locks, or tiles that might interfere with the blind. Note the position of any fixtures. For bay windows, measure each section individually.

Common Mistakes to Avoid - Using a fabric tape measure (they stretch!) - Measuring in inches instead of centimetres - Assuming all windows are the same size - Not checking for obstructions - Measuring only once

Why Professional Measuring Matters Made-to-measure blinds are manufactured to your exact specifications. Inaccurate measurements mean blinds that don't fit properly. Our free home measuring service takes the stress away – and there's no obligation to buy.
